Marder Infantry Fighting Vehicles Delivered to Ukraine
The German defense firm Rheinmetall has announced plans to supply Ukraine with 20 additional Marder 1A3 infantry fighting vehicles by mid-2025. This new delivery, which is set to be financed by Berlin, comes with a price tag in the mid-range double digits of millions of euros. The upgraded Marder 1A3 model features an advanced laser rangefinder, significantly enhancing its target engagement capabilities.
Since the onset of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine in 2022, Germany has been a key supplier of military support to Kyiv, including multiple Marder tanks. In October, Rheinmetall completed the transfer of 20 vehicles, following an earlier delivery of the same number earlier this year. The initial batch supplied on behalf of the German government occurred in March 2023, and since then, hundreds of Marders have been delivered to bolster Ukraine’s defense efforts.
Maintenance and Support Initiatives
In addition to the ongoing tank deliveries, Rheinmetall has established a maintenance and repair hub within Ukraine, which has been operational since June. This facility is focused on providing essential maintenance and overhaul services specifically for the Marder infantry fighting vehicles. By establishing this center, Rheinmetall aims to ensure that the vehicles remain in optimal condition for operational use.
Looking ahead, the company plans to expand its support services further by incorporating maintenance for other German military equipment, including Leopard 1 and Leopard 2 main battle tanks. This initiative reflects Rheinmetall’s commitment to enhancing the operational capabilities of the Ukrainian armed forces by maintaining various German-made systems across multiple locations in Ukraine.
Commitment to Ukraine
Rheinmetall’s CEO, Armin Papperger, emphasized the company’s dedication to supporting Ukraine effectively and reliably. He stated, “It is a matter close to our hearts to provide Ukraine with effective and reliable support.” This commitment is being realized through a multifaceted approach that utilizes existing channels with original manufacturers, along with local processing and supply chain reactivation.
Moreover, Rheinmetall is keen on integrating local production capabilities within Ukraine, aiming to foster a sustainable defense support environment. This strategic move not only aids in immediate military support but also strengthens Ukraine’s long-term defense infrastructure.
