Sweden Enhances Coastal Defense with RBS15 Missile Modernization
Sweden has taken a significant step to strengthen its coastal defense capabilities by awarding a contract to its local industry partner, Saab, for the modernization of the Robotsystem 15 (RBS15) anti-ship missile system. The contract, valued at 800 million Swedish kronor (approximately $72.3 million), involves supplying an undisclosed number of RBS15 units in the advanced Mark 3 configuration, all of which will be integrated into mobile truck-mounted launchers.
This new procurement is intended to complement the existing RBS15 Mark 2 missiles that were introduced into service in 2016. According to Sweden’s Defence Materiel Administration (FMV), enhancing the capabilities of these missiles is crucial in bolstering the nation’s naval defense amid evolving global security challenges.

Ulrika Tode, the FMV Head of Marine Materiel Surface Weapons, emphasized the necessity of improving naval targeting capabilities, stating, “Given the current global situation, it is critical to enhance naval targeting capabilities with mobile units that can be quickly redeployed.” This statement underscores the importance of adaptability in military operations, particularly in maritime environments.
The modernization of the RBS15 missile system is not just about replacing old technology; it is about ensuring that the Swedish Army can respond effectively to potential threats. He remarked that the new missile comes equipped with a more sophisticated target seeker, extended range, and a larger warhead, which collectively contribute to its effectiveness in complex operational environments.
Johansson also pointed out that the RBS15 is specifically engineered to perform well in the challenging weather conditions of the Baltic Sea, making it a reliable asset for Sweden’s coastal defense strategy. The missile’s design reflects an understanding of the unique operational landscape that the Swedish military must navigate.
Technical Specifications of the RBS15 Mark 3
The RBS15 Mark 3 missile measures 4 meters (13 feet) in length and has a fuselage diameter of 50 centimeters (2 feet), with a wingspan of approximately 100 centimeters (3 feet). This compact design allows for versatile deployment options while maintaining a formidable presence on the battlefield.
With a total weight of 820 kilograms (1,807 pounds) including boosters, and approximately 660 kilograms (1,455 pounds) during flight, the RBS15 is a powerful weapon. It boasts a maximum speed of Mach 0.9 (1,111 kilometers/691 miles per hour) and an impressive operational range exceeding 200 kilometers (124 miles), ensuring that it can engage targets effectively from a safe distance.
