MAST-F Missile: New Era in Long-Range Precision Strikes
The French defense procurement agency has successfully conducted the inaugural long-range test of the MAST-F missile, also known as the AKERON LP. This significant milestone was achieved at the DGA Essais de Missile test center in southern France, where the missile was launched from a crane apparatus. The primary objectives of the test included assessing the missile’s overall performance during a typical trajectory and ensuring safe separation from the launch tube.
During the trial, the missile prototype was equipped with a telemetry system designed for comprehensive data collection. The results confirmed the missile’s aerodynamic stability and guidance capabilities. Furthermore, the trial validated the effectiveness of both the booster and main propulsion system, with the booster providing initial acceleration and the main system enabling a flight range of up to 8 kilometers (5 miles). This successful evaluation also included the deployment of the missile’s wings and fins, underscoring the safety measures incorporated into its design.
Collaboration and Future Deployment
The MAST-F project is spearheaded by MBDA, which serves as the prime contractor, while the national defense procurement agency and the Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation collaborate as subcontractors. This advanced missile is set to be integrated into the French Army’s Tiger Mk III helicopters, with deliveries anticipated to commence in 2029.
One of the key objectives of the MAST-F missile program is to outperform existing third and fourth-generation air-to-ground weaponry, such as the renowned American AGM-114 Hellfire. With its enhanced range and precision capabilities, the MAST-F is expected to redefine operational standards in aerial combat.
Enhanced Range and Targeting Capabilities
Designed for optimal performance, the MAST-F missile boasts an impressive operational range. When launched from rotary-wing platforms, it can strike targets at a distance of 8 kilometers (5 miles), while unmanned aerial vehicles can extend this range to an astonishing 20 kilometers (12.4 miles). This adaptability marks a significant advancement in the capabilities of modern missile systems.
The missile is equipped with cutting-edge technology, including a high-resolution multi-band imager and sophisticated data links. These features, combined with multi-mode guidance algorithms, provide the MAST-F with versatile engagement options. Operators can utilize various modes such as fire-and-forget, human-in-the-loop targeting, pre-locking of targets prior to launch, or post-launch locking for beyond-line-of-sight operations.
