Pohjanmaa-class Corvette: Finnish Navy’s New Warship

Rauma Marine Constructions has successfully completed the hull development for the Finnish Navy’s inaugural Pohjanmaa-class multi-purpose corvette. The outfitting process will continue in Satakunta, located in southern Finland, leading up to the ship’s official induction scheduled for later this spring. Meanwhile, the company has also wrapped up the production of a heavy-lift ramp and is progressing on a submersible barge designed to assist in launching the first corvette.

This significant achievement is part of Finland’s broader initiative to develop up to four modern warships, which aim to replace the current aging fleet of anti-submarine and missile boats. Rauma is on track to deliver all corvettes from this project by 2029, with production of the second Pohjanmaa-class vessel commencing in October 2024.

Capabilities and Design of the Pohjanmaa-class Corvette

The Finnish Defence Forces highlighted that these corvettes are specifically designed to operate under the varied conditions of the Baltic Sea. They are equipped to conduct year-round naval operations and can perform a range of missions, including maritime attack prevention, naval mine-laying, underwater warfare, and safeguarding maritime connections.

The Pohjanmaa corvette, measuring 17 meters (or 384 feet), will boast an array of advanced technologies. It is set to be armed with multi-domain missiles, remote weapon systems, automatic guns, torpedoes, and capabilities for electronic warfare. The vessel will be driven by a combined diesel-electric and gas propulsion system, generating 38,000 horsepower, and will feature twin bow thrusters and controllable pitch propellers.

Operational Features and Specifications

Designed for versatility, the Pohjanmaa-class corvette can accommodate over 70 personnel and has the capability to carry a helicopter along with additional naval air solutions. Its operational endurance extends up to 14 days, ensuring that it can sustain prolonged missions at sea.

In terms of performance, the corvette can reach a maximum speed of 26 knots (approximately 48 kilometers or 30 miles per hour) and has an impressive operational range of 6,500 kilometers (around 4,039 miles). These specifications underscore the vessel’s role as a formidable asset in the Finnish Navy’s fleet.
