Algeria Becomes First Export Customer for Su-57
In a significant development, Algeria has officially emerged as the first international buyer of Russia’s advanced Su-57 stealth fighter jet. This news was confirmed by state media in Algeria, which reported that Algerian pilots are currently receiving training in Russia. The much-anticipated delivery of these aircraft is expected to take place within this year, although specific details regarding the contractual agreement have yet to be disclosed.
This announcement follows a statement from Alexander Mikheev, the CEO of Rosoboronexport, Russia’s state-owned defense corporation, made during the Aero India 2025 exhibition. Mikheev noted, “The first foreign customer of the promising fifth-generation multirole fighter Su-57E will begin operating this aircraft, which will be supplied by Rosoboronexport, in 2025.” The initial agreement for the Su-57 was first made public in November of the previous year, but the identity of the buyer remained a mystery until Algeria’s recent confirmation.
A Historical Defense Partnership
Algeria’s relationship with Russia dates back to the 1960s, making Moscow the primary supplier of military equipment to the North African nation. This partnership has grown stronger over the years, particularly in 2023, when both countries signed a mutual agreement aimed at enhancing military cooperation. This agreement underscores Algeria’s commitment to modernizing its defense capabilities and securing advanced military technology from Russia.
The collaboration between Algeria and Russia is not only significant for military logistics but also serves geopolitical interests, as both nations seek to bolster their influence in the region. The Su-57 Fighter Jet: A Technological Marvel
Known by NATO as the ‘Felon,’ the Su-57 is a fifth-generation stealth fighter jet designed to engage both aerial and surface targets effectively. Its export variant, the Su-57E, boasts impressive specifications, including a maximum speed of 1,350 kilometers per hour at low altitudes. With a service ceiling of 18,800 meters and a combat radius of 1,250 kilometers, this aircraft is engineered to compete with top-tier models like the US F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lightning II.
The prototype of the Su-57 made its inaugural flight in January 2010, marking a significant milestone in Russian aerospace development. However, the program has encountered various hurdles, such as slow production rates and challenges in securing export deals. Notably, India’s withdrawal from the project in 2018, due to disagreements over technology sharing and cost-sharing arrangements, added to the program’s complications. Furthermore, setbacks like a crash in 2019 and sanctions imposed in response to Russia’s actions in Ukraine have also hindered progress.
