Exail is set to bolster the Finnish Navy’s operational capabilities with the provision of advanced navigation systems for its Pohjanmaa-class corvette program. This cutting-edge equipment includes the Marins M3 and Phins inertial navigation systems (INS), both designed to ensure precise positioning and orientation in a variety of maritime environments. Notably, these systems are protected by shock-mounted casings, engineered to endure the challenges posed by intense marine shocks.
According to Exail, this delivery represents a pivotal step towards modernizing the Finnish Navy fleet, enhancing its effectiveness in the strategically significant Baltic Sea region. Each of the Pohjanmaa-class vessels will be outfitted with these reliable INS, establishing a redundant navigation framework that ensures operational integrity even in scenarios where signals from global navigation satellite systems may be compromised.
Enhanced Stealth Capabilities
Exail is recognized globally for its high-precision INS technology, which is utilized by over 50 navies around the world for a diverse array of naval platforms, ranging from small vessels to aircraft carriers and submarines. The advanced INS technology guarantees precision positioning during long missions, boasting a minimal drift of merely 1 nautical mile (1.1 miles/1.8 kilometers) every 360 hours. Moreover, Exail’s systems have the ability to dynamically adapt to fluctuating maritime conditions, providing real-time navigation adjustments to ensure consistent operational performance.
Crucially, the design considerations for Exail’s INS include minimizing acoustic emissions, significantly enhancing the stealth capabilities of naval operations. This reduction in noise levels enables naval forces to execute sensitive missions in high-risk areas while maintaining an element of discretion and operational efficacy.
Finland’s Pohjanmaa Corvettes
The construction of Finland’s four new Pohjanmaa-class corvettes is currently underway, with the vessels anticipated to be operational by 2029. Each corvette is designed to accommodate a crew of up to 70 members and can achieve speeds exceeding 26 knots (48 kilometers or 30 miles per hour). These state-of-the-art ships will be equipped for multi-domain defense, capable of effectively countering aerial and missile threats.
