Royal Navy Merlin Helicopters: New Leonardo Contract Details

The UK government has awarded Leonardo a substantial contract aimed at extending integrated fleet-wide support for the Royal Navy’s fleet of Merlin helicopters. This agreement, valued at over £165 million ($217 million), encompasses vital sustainment services for all 30 Merlin HM Mk2 maritime patrol helicopters and 24 Merlin HC Mk4/Mk4A transport variants, a critical component of the Royal Navy’s operational capabilities.

In line with previous arrangements, the contract includes extensive depth maintenance, supply of spare parts, training for aircrew and repair teams, as well as comprehensive technical support. Crucially, the agreement also addresses proactive obsolescence management, ensuring that the Merlin helicopters remain reliable and up-to-date throughout their operational lifespan. The British government’s commitment to this project is expected to contribute to around 1,000 jobs and apprenticeships across the UK, enhancing local employment rates.

Leonardo’s Vision for the Future

Nigel Colman, Managing Director of Leonardo Helicopters UK, emphasized the importance of collaboration with the Ministry of Defence and the Royal Navy. He stated, ‘By working closely with the Ministry of Defence and Royal Navy, we’re ensuring the Merlin fleet is supported and available whenever and wherever it is needed.’ He also highlighted the forward-looking aspect of this agreement, mentioning the ongoing Rotary Wing Enterprise (RWE) initiative, designed to transform support mechanisms across the entire UK rotary fleet.

This contract extension comes as the Royal Navy prepares to launch an infrastructure modernization project for the Merlin fleet base in Cornwall, set to commence in October 2024. Running until 2028, this initiative aims to upgrade hangars, operational grounds, and training facilities, which are crucial for maintaining the fleet’s readiness.

Supporting the Merlin Fleet’s Engine Requirements

Earlier in the year, the British government signed a separate but complementary contract with Safran to enhance engine support for the Merlin fleet. This agreement ensures six years of service for the Rolls-Royce Turbomeca RTM 322 engines that power these medium-sized helicopters, thereby ensuring that the fleet is equipped with reliable and efficient power sources.

The combination of these contracts showcases the UK’s commitment to maintaining the operational effectiveness of the Royal Navy’s Merlin helicopters. Both Leonardo and Safran play vital roles in ensuring that the fleet remains capable and ready to respond to the demands of maritime security.
