Israel Responds to Threats Against the Druze Community

In a statement on Thursday, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz asserted that the nation would have no hesitation in using significant military force if the Syrian government fails to protect the Druze minority. This announcement follows two consecutive days of violent sectarian clashes near the Syrian capital, Damascus, raising alarms about the safety of this vulnerable group.

Katz emphasized, “If the attacks on the Druze resume and the Syrian regime does not act to prevent them, Israel will take decisive action.” His comments reflect deep concerns regarding the escalating violence in the region, particularly directed at the Druze community.

Increased Support for the Druze

Israel has ramped up its support for Syria’s Druze, with Foreign Minister Gideon Saar advocating for international intervention. On Thursday, he called upon the global community to step up its efforts in safeguarding minority groups in Syria, particularly the Druze, from the actions of the Assad regime and its affiliated militia.

Saar’s appeal underscores the urgency of the situation, especially in light of reports indicating that at least 101 individuals have died during the recent clashes, the majority of whom were Druze fighters. These statistics showcase the grave risk faced by the community amidst the chaos.

Military Actions and Preparations

Reacting to these developments, Israel conducted a targeted airstrike against an extremist faction, which was allegedly planning an assault on the Druze community near Damascus. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu noted that this operation, executed in the town of Sahnaya, served as a clear warning to the Syrian government regarding its responsibilities.

In coordination with these military actions, Israel’s armed forces have heightened preparations to engage Syrian government targets should further violence against the Druze occur. As a part of these strategic moves, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have provided medical assistance to injured Druze individuals, successfully evacuating two on Thursday following the previous day’s extraction of three more.

Medical Support for Injured Druze

According to military sources, the injured Druze were transported to the northern Israeli town of Safed for medical treatment after sustaining injuries within Syrian territory. Although the military has refrained from disclosing any specifics regarding the circumstances of their injuries, the evacuations signify Israel’s commitment to assisting the Druze during this critical time.

The IDF has also reassured that it is actively positioned in southern Syria to thwart any hostile incursions into Druze villages, indicating a readiness to protect this community from escalating threats. This highlights Israel’s proactive stance in securing the safety of the Druze amidst ongoing regional instability.
