Israel Pursues Advanced Missile Technology
Israel’s Ministry of Defense (MoD) is currently engaged in advanced negotiations with the United States regarding the procurement of Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missiles (JASSM) from Lockheed Martin. While the specifics of the potential deal remain somewhat unclear, the Israeli newspaper Globes reported that discussions are progressing. The MoD has refrained from providing comments on the matter, and Lockheed Martin has directed all inquiries to the U.S. government, emphasizing that foreign military sales are primarily government-to-government transactions.
According to Globes, a representative from Lockheed Martin stated, “Foreign military sales are government-to-government transactions, and we work closely with the US government on any military sales to international customers.” This underscores the complexities involved in international defense agreements and the importance of U.S. oversight in such negotiations.
Capabilities of JASSM Missiles
The Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile was first introduced in 2009 and is available in both standard and extended range models. The standard version boasts an impressive range of approximately 370 kilometers (230 miles), whereas the extended range version can reach targets up to 930 kilometers (578 miles) away. Each missile is equipped with a robust 450-kilogram (992 pound) blast fragmentation warhead, which is designed for significant impact against well-defended ground targets, including command and control centers and air defense installations.
Despite its formidable capabilities, the JASSM is not ideally suited for striking Iran’s heavily fortified nuclear facilities, should a conflict arise. However, it would enhance the operational flexibility of the Israeli Air Force by providing them with the ability to engage specific targets from a safe distance. Traditionally, Israel has relied on its air-launched ballistic missiles for long-range attacks due to their high speed, but cruise missiles like the JASSM-ER generally possess a superior payload-to-weight ratio.
