AeroVironment Upgrades Dutch Puma UAS Fleet
The Netherlands Ministry of Defence has enlisted AeroVironment Inc. (AV) to enhance its Puma unmanned aerial systems fleet under a newly awarded contract. This initiative aims to bolster the survivability and communication capabilities of the Puma 3 AE models, optimizing them for critical missions in environments where GPS signals may be compromised. Additionally, the upgrade plans to incorporate a vertical takeoff and landing feature, increasing the operational flexibility and effectiveness of these systems in supporting ground troops.
In addition to the upgrades, Amsterdam is set to receive more of the advanced Puma LE systems, extending the military’s drone capabilities. These latest additions will cater to missions that demand longer operational ranges, greater payload capacity, and improved endurance. Delivery of the Puma 3 AE and LE models is underway, with these systems designed for swift deployment at both squad and platoon levels, enhancing intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance operations for various military and civilian applications.
Enhanced Technology for Challenging Environments
Trace Stevenson, President of AV Autonomous Systems, emphasized the significance of this partnership, noting the importance of versatile, mission-ready unmanned systems within NATO. “AV’s battle-tested Puma platforms are built to provide real-time intelligence and exceptional agility on the battlefield,” he stated, highlighting how these enhancements empower allies to make more informed decisions in the most demanding scenarios.
The contract coincides with the recent unveiling of the upgraded Puma 3 AE and LE drones, which were launched last November. These new systems feature advanced software enhancements designed to improve spoofing detection and countermeasures, thereby augmenting the users’ capabilities to operate in electromagnetic and hostile environments. The dimensions of the Puma 3 AE measure 9 feet in length and 5 feet in wingspan, while the larger LE variant extends to 15 feet in length with a wingspan of 7 feet, offering a robust platform for diverse operational requirements.
