Reis-Class Submarine: TCG Murat Reis Launch and Details
The Turkish Ministry of Defence has unveiled its third Reis-class submarine, the TCG Murat Reis (S-332), during a ceremony at the Gölcük Naval Shipyard in Kocaeli. This significant event commemorates not only the launch of the submarine but also aligns with two notable anniversaries: the 572nd anniversary of the Conquest of Istanbul and the 114th anniversary of the Turkish Air Force.
The Reis-class submarine program reflects Turkey’s advanced maritime capabilities, featuring six submarines based on the German Type 214 diesel-electric export model. Starting this year, Turkey plans to launch one submarine each year, aiming to achieve full operational capability by 2028.
Specifications of the Reis-Class Submarine
Measuring 68 meters (223 feet) in length, the Reis-class submarine is designed to host a crew of over 30 personnel, providing ample space for operations. This class is equipped with an array of sophisticated weaponry, including Mk64 lightweight anti-submarine torpedoes, Aska heavyweight torpedoes designed for both anti-submarine and anti-ship roles, dual-purpose DM2A4 torpedoes, and Atmaca anti-ship missiles.
The submarine boasts a 5,200-horsepower primary engine, supplemented by two diesel generators and two fuel cells. This powerful combination enables the vessel to reach speeds up to 20 knots (37 kilometers/23 miles per hour) and extend its range to an impressive 12,000 nautical miles (22,224 kilometers/13,809 miles), significantly enhancing Turkey’s naval capabilities.
