A400M DIRCM System Enhances German Air Force Protection

Airbus has secured a significant contract with the German arms procurement agency to equip 23 A400M aircraft of the German Air Force with advanced DIRCM (Directed Infrared Counter Measures) protection systems. These systems, developed by Elbit Systems, are designed to protect aircraft from infrared-guided missiles, which are primarily launched from man-portable air defense systems. The comprehensive contract further includes essential training, service bulletins, and specialized tools.

The installation of these DIRCM systems will take place during regular maintenance scheduled at Airbus facilities in Manching, southern Germany, as well as at sites in Getafe and Sevilla, Spain. Currently, testing is underway on a German A400M in Sevilla, with full certification of the system anticipated by the summer of 2025. The complete installation of these systems is projected to continue through to 2032.

Enhanced Capabilities

Gerd Weber, Head of the A400M program at Airbus Defence and Space, emphasized the crucial role of the A400M in the German Air Force. He stated, “Transporting troops, equipment, and humanitarian supplies, refueling other aircraft and helicopters in the air, serving as a flying hospital for the treatment of wounded personnel – the Airbus A400M is the face and workhorse of the German Air Force.” With the integration of the new DIRCM system, A400M crews can expect enhanced protection while conducting worldwide missions.

The German Air Force operates a fleet of 42 Airbus A400M aircraft, which serve multiple purposes including air transport, airborne refueling, and medical evacuations. The jets selected for DIRCM installation are specifically assigned to tactical operations and medical missions, further expanding the versatile capabilities of the A400M.

Performance Specifications of A400M

The Airbus A400M is not only renowned for its versatility but also for its impressive specifications. It can transport and airdrop both personnel and cargo, potentially accommodating up to 116 passengers. This aircraft boasts a maximum takeoff weight of 141 tons, elevating it to the status of a powerhouse in the skies.

In terms of performance, the A400M reaches a service ceiling of approximately 12,000 meters (39,370 feet) and has a remarkable operational range of 3,300 kilometers (2,050 miles) while flying at full payload. Moreover, it can achieve a top speed of 750 kilometers (466 miles) per hour, maintaining cruising speeds of Mach 0.68 (840 kilometers/522 miles per hour) at an altitude of 10,000 meters (32,789 feet). This blend of capabilities undeniably highlights the A400M’s status as an indispensable asset for the German Air Force.
