Airbus Secures Additional A330 MRTT Contract for NATO

Airbus has officially announced a significant contract to deliver two more A330 Multi-Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) aircraft to NATO. Set for delivery in 2028 and 2029, this addition will enhance NATO’s air refueling and cargo capabilities, bringing the total number of operational platforms to 12. This strategic decision follows the formal inclusion of Sweden and Denmark into NATO’s Multinational MRTT Fleet (MMF) program, which is orchestrated by the alliance’s Support and Procurement Agency to consolidate heavy airlift resources among its member countries.

With Sweden and Denmark joining the MMF, the initiative now includes eight nations that have the authority to operate the enhanced fleet. Airbus confirmed that the manufacturing and necessary modifications for these new A330 aircraft will take place at their facilities located in Toulouse, France, and Getafe, Spain.

European Commitment to Collective Defense

“The addition of these two aircraft and the integration of Sweden and Denmark into the Multinational MRTT Fleet underscores Europe’s dedication to collective defense and strategic independence,” remarked Jean-Brice Dumont, head of Air Power at Airbus Defence and Space. “This partnership illustrates how the European defense industry can effectively meet the shifting security landscape through innovation and collaborative efforts.”

This expansion of NATO’s airlift capabilities is a clear sign of the alliance’s adaptive approach to contemporary security challenges, reinforcing the importance of cooperative defense strategies among European nations.

Technical Specifications of the A330 MRTT

The A330 MRTT, a versatile aircraft, boasts a length of 59 meters (194 feet) and a wingspan of 60 meters (197 feet). This model is designed for both cargo transport and passenger capacity, supporting a payload of 45,000 kilograms (99,208 pounds) or seating for up to 290 individuals. Additionally, it has an impressive fuel capacity of 111,000 kilograms (244,713 pounds), making it ideal for extended air missions.

Powering the A330 MRTT are various engine options depending on the operator, including two Rolls-Royce Trent 772Bs, two General Electric CF6-80E1s, or two Pratt & Whitney PW4170 engines. This flexibility allows for an estimated total output ranging from 340,000 to 360,000 horsepower. The aircraft is capable of covering a considerable distance, with a range of 8,000 nautical miles (14,816 kilometers or 9,206 miles) and can operate at altitudes of 13,000 meters (42,651 feet) with a maximum speed of 475 knots (880 kilometers/547 miles per hour).
