VIDAR Laser Rangefinder Enhances Danish Navy’s Capabilities
Sweden-based Lumibird Photonics has announced a significant development for the Royal Danish Navy, having secured a contract with Saab to supply 57 VIDAR laser rangefinders for the navy’s frigate fleet. This strategic partnership is expected to enhance the operational capabilities of Danish frigates with the delivery scheduled for 2025 and 2026. The VIDAR systems will be integrated into Saab’s advanced CEROS naval fire control systems, which are already employed on these naval vessels.
The introduction of VIDAR rangefinders will provide the Danish Navy with real-time, high-frequency distance measurement capabilities. This technology is particularly advantageous for enhancing threat tracking and improving precision targeting of naval guns and missile launchers, especially when dealing with fast-moving targets such as drones or surface ships in complex maritime environments.
A Commitment to Maritime Security
Commenting on this notable achievement, Marc LE Flohic, CEO of the Lumibird Group, expressed pride in the technological advancement of the VIDAR rangefinder. He highlighted, “This new success with Saab confirms the versatility and technical maturity of our VIDAR rangefinder. We are honored that our technology is being deployed aboard NATO vessels, contributing to the Danish Ministry of Defence’s mission to safeguard maritime security.”
In addition, Carina Harnesk, CEO of Lumibird Photonics Sweden, pointed out the company’s optimism regarding future opportunities. She noted, “We see strong potential for future orders from additional users with similar operational requirements,” emphasizing the growing demand for sophisticated rangefinding technology.
The Features of VIDAR
The VIDAR laser rangefinder stands out due to its compact and rugged design, which allows for integration across various platforms, including ground, airborne, and naval systems. Utilizing diode-pumped erbium-glass laser technology, the device ensures high performance while remaining eye-safe and compact. With a configurable maximum range of 32 kilometers (20 miles), the VIDAR delivers exceptional targeting precision, boasting an accuracy of under 4 meters (13 feet) and a resolution of 1 meter (3.3 feet).
Designed for demanding operational conditions, the VIDAR rangefinder features a pulse repetition rate of up to 12.5 Hertz, all housed within a sealed body measuring 318 x 145 x 141 millimeters (12.5 x 5.7 x 5.6 inches) and weighing less than 5.6 kilograms (12.3 pounds). Its design eliminates the need for moving parts, fans, or cooling fluids, significantly minimizing maintenance requirements. Notably, VIDAR is classified as an eye-safe Class 1M laser, making it suitable for both active missions and peacetime training exercises.
