Sweden Expands Naval Fleet with New Combat Boats
Sweden has fortified its naval defenses by placing an order for 22 advanced combat boats from Saab, a deal worth approximately 900 million Swedish kronor, or $94 million. These new vessels will be manufactured at Saab’s Docksta shipyard, with deliveries slated for the coming years. The highlighted model, the CB90HSM, represents the latest iteration of the CB90 series, boasting improved speed, maneuverability, firepower, and situational awareness.
This latest order follows a previous commitment made by Sweden in June 2024 for 10 next-generation combat boats at a cost of $38 million. Mats Wicksell, who heads Saab’s business area Kockums, expressed pride in the deal, stating, “This order represents a significant enhancement to Sweden’s naval capabilities. We are proud that Saab’s combat boats continue to contribute to Sweden’s defense.”
CB90HSM: A Modern Combat Vessel
The CB90HSM combat boat, crafted entirely from aluminum, is engineered for high-speed military operations. It is capable of ferrying both troops and equipment while ensuring stability and agility, even in challenging conditions. With a total length of 16.3 meters (53.5 feet) and a hull length of 14.9 meters, this vessel can deftly navigate shallow coastal waters, courtesy of its 0.9-meter (3-foot) draft.
This powerful boat can achieve speeds exceeding 40 knots (46 miles or 74 kilometers per hour) when fully loaded and maintains a cruising speed of 38 knots (43 miles or 70 kilometers per hour). Furthermore, it boasts an operational range of up to 300 nautical miles (345 miles or 555 kilometers), making it well-suited for prolonged patrols and swift response missions. Features such as a modern combat management system, advanced surveillance sensors, and the ability to deploy stabilized turntables and small missile systems enhance its combat effectiveness.
The CB90HSM also includes Saab’s state-of-the-art Trackfire remote weapon station, improving its targeting and engagement capabilities significantly. For the protection of its crew, the vessel is equipped with ballistic shielding that includes polyethylene lining and reinforced safety glass.
