Estonia Receives Final Shipment of CAESAR Howitzers

The Estonian Ministry of Defense has confirmed the arrival of the final shipment of six French-made CAESAR 155 mm wheeled self-propelled howitzers, marking a significant enhancement to the nation’s artillery capabilities. This delivery completes an order of 12 systems, which were procured to bolster the firepower and combat readiness of the Estonian Defense Forces.

In a social media announcement, officials emphasized that the CAESAR howitzers are essential for increasing the mobility and operational effectiveness of the defense forces. This final batch follows the successful operational integration of the first battery, which achieved initial capability back in July.

Training and Operational Readiness

With the arrival of the last six CAESAR systems, comprehensive training for Estonian forces has been a priority. Soldiers have completed both theoretical and practical training focused on the use and fire control of the new artillery units. Various exercises have already taken place, ensuring that troops are well-prepared to deploy these advanced systems.

The successful operational readiness demonstrates Estonia’s commitment to integrating the CAESAR howitzers into their defense strategy. This preparation is crucial as tensions in the region necessitate a capable and responsive military force.

Contract and Future Procurement Options

The contract for the CAESAR howitzers was established on June 19, 2024, with the French Defense Procurement Agency (DGA) and the manufacturing company KNDS France. The agreement not only encompassed the initial twelve units but also included a framework for an additional twelve units, allowing Estonia to strengthen its artillery unit even further.

The Estonian Ministry of Defense has also indicated that they may exercise the option clause in the contract for additional procurement in the future, signalling an ongoing commitment to enhancing military capabilities.

Timeline of Deliveries and Future Plans

The first delivery of the CAESAR systems occurred in January 2025, laying the groundwork for their operational deployment. As the artillery landscape evolves, Estonia has made strategic moves to ensure its defense remains robust and prepared.

In addition to the CAESAR units, Estonia boasts a diverse arsenal, including 24 South Korean-produced K9 phục self-propelled howitzers and six U.S.-produced M142 HIMARS multiple rocket launch systems. Plans are in place to increase the K9 inventory to 36 units by 2026 and to double the number of HIMARS as critical components of Estonia’s artillery structure.

Technical Specifications of CAESAR Howitzers

The CAESAR howitzers are notably recognized for their advanced design, mounted on a 6×6 Sherpa truck chassis. These systems feature a 155 mm/52 caliber gun, capable of firing up to six rounds per minute and achieving effective ranges of up to 40 kilometers, depending on the ammunition used.

One of the standout features of the CAESAR system is its rapid repositioning capability, allowing it to move to a new location in under a minute, significantly reducing vulnerability to counter-battery fire. With a carrying capacity of 18 rounds, the CAESAR enhances operational flexibility and minimizes exposure during engagements.
