Embraer Enhances C-390 Fleet with Aeromedical Evacuation System

Embraer is gearing up to enhance the capabilities of the Royal Netherlands Air Force’s C-390 Millennium fleet with the introduction of an advanced aeromedical evacuation system. This milestone agreement was formalized by Vice Admiral Jan Willem Hartman, the Dutch Commander of Materiel and IT Command, alongside Embraer CEO Bosco da Costa Junior. While the details surrounding the agreement’s terms and financial aspects remain undisclosed, it involves one firm order and seven additional purchase orders.

Central to this system is a state-of-the-art roll-on/roll-off medical module. This self-contained, air-transportable unit is specifically engineered to provide comprehensive life support and intensive care, essential for the transport of patients. Notably, the system includes an isolation area for patients with infectious diseases, effectively mitigating risks for both medical staff and crew. Its design ensures full compatibility with the C-390’s cargo handling system, allowing for seamless operation akin to that of wheeled cargo.

Modular Airborne Medical Facility Revolutionizes Operations

Vice Admiral Hartman expressed enthusiasm over the transformative impact this aeromedical system will have on their aircraft. He noted, “This system will expand the operational capabilities of our C-390 Millennium fleet, evolving them into modular airborne medical facilities capable of delivering life-saving care both in transit and on the ground. With these advanced features, we can ensure that critical assistance is provided precisely when it is most needed.”

Supporting this sentiment, da Costa highlighted the significance of the modular medical system in the aircraft’s ongoing evolution. He remarked, “We are proud to support the Netherlands in bolstering their aeromedical response capabilities through this innovative and mission-ready solution.” This development marks a significant step forward for the C-390 fleet, cementing its role in emergency medical operations.

C-390 Aircraft Characteristics and Global Adoption

The C-390 Millennium aircraft is known for its versatility and performance as a multi-mission transport aircraft. With an impressive payload capacity of 26 metric tons (about 57,320 pounds) and a top speed of 470 knots (or 870 kilometers per hour), it is capable of operating effectively across various terrains, including both paved and unpaved surfaces like packed earth, soil, and gravel.

This adaptability has garnered international attention, exemplified by Lithuania’s decision to select the C-390 as its next military transport aircraft. Furthermore, Portugal has recently announced its intention to acquire a sixth KC-390 Millennium from Embraer, indicating a growing recognition of the aircraft’s potential in military logistics.
