Poland Secures Apache Helicopters

Poland has entered into a significant leasing agreement worth $300 million with the United States, securing eight Boeing AH-64D Apache Longbow attack helicopters for its military. This contract not only encompasses the helicopters themselves but also includes comprehensive training, spare parts, technical assistance, and logistics support, ensuring that these advanced aircraft are ready for operational deployment.

The eight AH-64Ds will be stationed with the 1st Land Forces Aviation Brigade in Inowrocław, providing essential aerial support to ground forces. Training for aircrew members is already underway, with the helicopters expected to be delivered between the second and third quarters of this year.

An Interim Solution for Enhanced Military Capability

This lease arrangement serves as a temporary measure to enhance Poland’s airborne attack capabilities while the country awaits the arrival of the latest AH-64E Apache ‘Guardian’ helicopters, which were ordered in 2024. As part of a broader initiative to modernize its military amid increasing tensions on NATO’s eastern front, Poland has placed an order for 96 AH-64E helicopters, with the first 15 expected to be delivered by Boeing in 2028.

Upon completion of this order, Poland will emerge as the second-largest operator of Apache helicopters globally, following the United States. This development is poised to significantly bolster Poland’s defense capabilities and underscores the country’s commitment to modernizing its military aviation forces.

Specifications of the AH-64D Apache Longbow

The AH-64D Apache Longbow is an impressive aircraft, measuring 18 meters (59 feet) in length, with a rotor diameter of 15 meters (49 feet). It is equipped with a 30-millimeter M230 chain gun, alongside a range of guided and unguided rockets and multi-domain missiles, making it a formidable asset on the battlefield.

Powered by twin General Electric T700-GE-701 engines, each producing 2,000 horsepower, the Apache Longbow can reach a top speed of 150 knots, equivalent to 278 kilometers per hour (173 miles per hour). This combination of firepower and speed enhances its operational effectiveness, making it a critical component of Poland’s military modernization efforts.
