US Approves AIM-9X Block II Missile Sale to Norway
The US State Department has granted approval for the potential sale of AIM-9X Block II tactical missiles to Norway, with a total value of $370.9 million. This significant deal includes 300 AIM-9X Block II tactical missiles, in addition to training missiles, guidance units, and containers for the missiles. Moreover, it encompasses vital software, training programs, and logistical support to ensure the effective integration of the missiles into Norway’s defense capabilities.
With RTX Corporation, located in Tucson, Arizona, designated as the primary contractor, this sale is seen not only as a military transaction but also as a strategic move to support a NATO ally. The US government emphasizes that this agreement is in line with its foreign policy and national security goals, aiming to bolster Norway’s defense capabilities and contribute to overall stability and economic growth in Europe.
Enhancing Norway’s Defense Capabilities
The inclusion of the AIM-9X Block II infrared-tracking missile in Norway’s arsenal will significantly enhance the country’s capability to address both current and future threats. This missile system is versatile, compatible with various aircraft platforms such as the F-15C Eagle, F-16 Fighting Falcon, and EA-18G Growler, thereby ensuring that Norway’s aviation forces maintain interoperability with both the US and other NATO allies.

Recently, Poland entered into a $175-million contract for more than 200 AIM-9X Block II air-to-air missiles. Additionally, in August 2024, the US government approved a significant procurement proposal from Canada worth approximately $265 million. This deal includes hundreds of AIM-9X tactical missiles, featuring 120 Block II missiles along with 48 more advanced Block II+ variants. Such contracts underline the US commitment to strengthening the defense capabilities of its allies, ensuring they are well-equipped to face evolving security challenges.
