Turkey Secures Altuğ 8×8 Armored Combat Vehicles for Military
Turkey has signed a significant contract with BMC, a prominent local automotive manufacturer, to deliver Altuğ 8×8 armored combat vehicles to its land forces. The agreement stipulates that the İzmir-based company will supply 29 vehicle hulls, accompanied by integrated logistics support services vital for military operations. This initiative is part of Turkey’s broader strategy to bolster the air and ground defense capabilities of its armed forces, particularly through enhancing the tactical vehicles available to them.
Each Altuğ unit is set to be outfitted with a sophisticated 35-millimeter turret system. This move follows a previous contract awarded to another Turkish industrial partner, FNSS, in February, which involved the provision of their PARS Alpha armored platforms aimed at modernizing Turkey’s military capabilities. These strategic purchases reflect Turkey’s commitment to advancing its defense technology and ensuring the readiness of its armed forces.
Advanced Features of the Altuğ Armored Vehicle
The Altuğ is an impressive 8-meter (26-foot) vehicle designed to serve in both infantry fighting and armored personnel carrier roles. It is typically armed with a double-fed automatic gun, a grenade launcher, and supplementary machine guns, making it a versatile asset on the battlefield. With a crew of three, the vehicle can also accommodate up to nine troops, enhancing its operational effectiveness in various combat scenarios.
In terms of protection, the Altuğ boasts high-level ballistic and mine resistance, ensuring the safety of its occupants in hostile environments. It is equipped with a comprehensive chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) protection system, alongside advanced fire suppression and explosion mitigation technologies. Additionally, the vehicle features sophisticated warning and detection systems for identifying enemy threats and weaponry, underscoring its role in modern warfare.
Performance Specifications of the Altuğ
Under the hood, the Altuğ is powered by a robust 711-horsepower Caterpillar C13 engine, coupled with a six-speed Allison transmission. This combination allows the vehicle to achieve a maximum speed of 110 kilometers (68 miles) per hour and offers a remarkable operational range exceeding 800 kilometers (497 miles). Such performance capabilities ensure that the Altuğ can navigate diverse terrains effectively.
Furthermore, the Altuğ is designed to handle challenging conditions, with the ability to ford through water depths of up to 220 centimeters (87 inches) and a vertical climb capability of 60 centimeters (24 inches). These specifications not only enhance the vehicle’s mobility but also make it a formidable presence on the battlefield, capable of adapting to various operational demands.
