Strengthening Defense Ties: Latvia and Sweden Partner on Archer Systems
The Latvian Ministry of Defence has formalized a strategic partnership with Sweden by signing a letter of intent for the acquisition of 18 Archer 8×8 self-propelled artillery systems. This agreement marks a significant milestone in defense collaboration and not only emphasizes military modernization but also includes the involvement of Latvian defense industries in the supply chain. Both nations are set to expand their cooperation further by establishing a joint Archer 6×6 unit and engaging in shared training initiatives for their armed forces.
Latvian Minister of Defence Andris Sprūds highlighted this agreement as a vital step towards enhancing military cooperation. According to Sprūds, “This accord lays a strong foundation for joint military exercises, soldier training, and the deployment of effective artillery systems beginning in 2026.” He emphasized that the partnership symbolizes a unified commitment to strengthening regional security amidst current geopolitical challenges.

The Archer Artillery System: Features and Capabilities

This 155mm wheeled platform comes equipped with an armored cabin, ensuring crew safety during operations. Its unique design allows for rapid repositioning, enabling the unit to leave its firing position within just 30 seconds after discharging its rounds.
Demonstrating impressive operational efficiency, the Archer can fire up to six rounds and relocate 500 meters (1,640 feet) in under two minutes. It is capable of utilizing conventional shells as well as advanced munitions like the BONUS anti-armor projectiles and the precision-guided Excalibur rounds. Following a recent review in 2023, the British Army selected the Archer to temporarily replace the AS90 self-propelled gun, further solidifying the system’s reputation on the battlefield.
