ASCOD Infantry Fighting Vehicles Enhance Latvia’s Military Strength
Latvia has taken a significant step in bolstering its defense capabilities by approving a second order for 42 ASCOD infantry fighting vehicles from GDELS-Santa Bárbara Sistemas. This move follows an initial order placed back in January. The total cost for the new vehicles amounts to 387 million euros ($446 million), which will play a crucial role in accelerating the development of Latvia’s mechanized infantry brigade.
Minister of Defense Andris Sprūds emphasized the importance of enhancing combat capabilities, stating, “We must continue to focus on strengthening combat capabilities… It is important to also bolster the capabilities of the Mechanized Brigade of the Land Forces of the National Armed Forces.” He noted that this acquisition is key not only to meet NATO objectives but also to significantly improve the brigade’s capability in executing national defense missions.
Response to Regional Security Challenges
Latvia’s decision to increase its military resources is a direct response to heightened security concerns following the invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Sharing a border with Russia, Latvia has recognized the necessity for a stronger defensive posture. As part of this comprehensive approach, the country has also entered into an agreement with Sweden to procure 18 Archer 8×8 self-propelled artillery systems.
The strategic partnership with Sweden and the investment in advanced military technology underline Latvia’s commitment to safeguarding its sovereignty and enhancing its defense forces against potential threats.
Delivery Timeline and Local Industry Involvement
The first ASCOD vehicle is expected to arrive as early as 2026, with deliveries from the second contract scheduled to commence in 2027. Notably, the initial order will involve significant participation from the local industry, with at least 30 percent of the assembly and component supply to be carried out in Latvia.
This local involvement is expected to integrate at least 10 Latvian companies into the supply chain, fostering domestic industry and creating jobs while enhancing technological capabilities in the defense sector.
Technical Specifications of the ASCOD
The ASCOD infantry fighting vehicle boasts advanced features, including NATO STANAG 4569 level four armor, which offers protection against kinetic threats and mine explosions. The vehicle is designed for a crew of three and can transport up to six soldiers along with their operational gear.
In terms of armament, the ASCOD is equipped with an autocannon, anti-tank missiles, and machine guns. Additionally, it incorporates cutting-edge battlefield situational awareness technologies, ensuring that troops are well-prepared for modern combat scenarios.
