Latvian Armed Forces to Acquire ASCOD Infantry Fighting Vehicles
The Latvian government has finalized a significant agreement with GDELS-Santa Bárbara Sistemas for the procurement of 42 ASCOD infantry fighting vehicles. This deal, valued at approximately 370 million euros (or $385 million), also encompasses logistics support, although the exact delivery timeline remains undisclosed.
Latvian Defense Minister Andris Spruds emphasized the importance of this procurement, stating, “The acquisition of modern infantry fighting vehicles signifies a new chapter in the mechanization of the Latvian Army’s Land Forces.” He further noted that this agreement is a crucial step for Latvia’s national military industry, contributing to the enhancement of the country’s defense capabilities.
Procurement Process and Evaluation
The procurement journey for these advanced vehicles commenced in early 2023, involving a rigorous selection process for potential suppliers. By Autumn 2023, functional tests were conducted, leading to a thorough evaluation by military officials. This assessment was comprehensive, considering factors such as platform costs, equipment availability, local industry engagement requirements, and projected delivery timelines.
Alejandro Page, Vice President of GDELS-Santa Bárbara Sistemas, expressed his gratitude for the selection of the ASCOD vehicle, stating, “We are honored that our ASCOD infantry fighting vehicle has been chosen by the Latvian National Armed Forces in this international competition.” He noted the eagerness to collaborate with Latvia’s defense industry to bolster the nation’s military capabilities.
Features of the ASCOD Infantry Fighting Vehicle
The ASCOD is designed with robust NATO STANAG 4569 level four armor, providing substantial protection against various threats, including kinetic impacts and mine blasts. It is capable of withstanding attacks from 14.5×114 mm machine guns and 20 mm autocannon rounds, ensuring the safety of its crew and troops.
This versatile tracked vehicle accommodates a three-member crew and has the capacity to transport six soldiers equipped with full combat gear. Additionally, it is armed with an autocannon, anti-tank weaponry, and machine guns, along with advanced technologies that enhance soldiers’ situational awareness on the battlefield.
