Bayraktar Akinci Drones Arrive in Morocco from Turkey
Morocco has officially received its first shipment of Bayraktar Akinci drones from Turkey, marking a significant milestone in military collaboration between the two nations. This delivery is part of a broader agreement reportedly signed in 2023, as confirmed by Forum FAR Maroc, a semi-official military news outlet in Rabat. The arrival of these advanced drones is seen as a crucial step toward enhancing the operational capabilities of the Royal Moroccan Air Force.
While the specific number of drones delivered has not been disclosed, this event signifies the commencement of efforts to integrate these advanced systems into Morocco’s military framework. Local media reports from November 2024 had already indicated that preparations were underway for the arrival of the Bayraktar Akinci drones, underscoring the anticipation surrounding this acquisition.
High-Altitude, Long-Endurance Capabilities
The Bayraktar Akinci drone, developed by the Turkish manufacturer Baykar, is engineered for a diverse array of missions, ranging from precision strikes to surveillance and command operations. It is designed to operate at impressive altitudes, reaching up to 40,000 feet (12,192 meters), and boasts long endurance capabilities, allowing it to remain airborne for as long as 20 hours.
In addition to its altitude and endurance, the Akinci drone can achieve speeds of up to 250 knots (463 kilometers or 287 miles per hour) and has an operational range of 5,000 kilometers (3,106 miles). One of its most notable features is its dual artificial intelligence-enabled avionics, which enhance its capabilities in signal processing, sensor fusion, and real-time situational awareness. The drone is equipped to carry a variety of munitions, including the Cirit missile, Bozok mini smart munition, MK-83 guided bombs, and both Gokdogan and Bozdogan air-to-air missiles.
Growing Ties Between Morocco and Turkey
The acquisition of the Akinci drones follows Morocco’s earlier procurement of 13 Bayraktar TB2 drones, which were valued at $70 million. The TB2s have been delivered in multiple phases, with the most recent shipment arriving just last month. This series of acquisitions highlights the strengthening defense ties between Morocco and Turkey.
The growing military cooperation between Rabat and Ankara encompasses various sectors, including electronic systems, smart technologies, and unmanned aerial platforms. As both nations continue to enhance their defense collaboration, the integration of advanced drone technology represents a significant advancement in Morocco’s military capabilities.
