Bayraktar Kizilelma: Turkey’s Revolutionary Fighter Jet

The Turkish defense company Baykar has made significant strides in the field of unmanned aviation with the recent testing of its Bayraktar Kizilelma prototype. This indigenous fighter jet is designed to enhance Turkey’s military capabilities, and the latest tests demonstrate notable upgrades to its performance. Among these improvements are advancements to the aircraft’s avionics architecture, which contribute to its overall functionality and operational effectiveness.

One of the key features of the upgraded Bayraktar Kizilelma is its integrated afterburner engine. This enhancement not only improves the aircraft’s maneuverability but also brings it closer to achieving supersonic speeds. Additionally, the incorporation of an Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar system allows for superior situational awareness, making the Kizilelma a formidable asset in modern aerial warfare.

Progressing Towards the First Unmanned Fighter Jet

According to Baykar, the development of the Kizilelma is on track with the established testing timeline. This ambitious project aims to produce Turkey’s first unmanned fighter jet, which is designed for high-performance missions. The aircraft boasts impressive specifications, including a service ceiling of 45,000 feet and an operational altitude of 25,000 feet, allowing it to operate effectively in diverse combat scenarios.

The Kizilelma has a maximum takeoff weight of 8,500 kilograms and a payload capacity of 1,500 kilograms. With an endurance exceeding four hours, it is capable of carrying out extended missions. Furthermore, the platform is engineered to integrate advanced weaponry, including laser-guided munitions and long-range cruise missiles, enhancing its combat versatility.

Expanding Baykar’s Global Reach

Baykar is recognized as a leading player in the Turkish defense industry and is making significant inroads in the global market. In 2024, the company reported that a remarkable 90 percent of its revenue came from exports, reflecting its growing influence in the sector. In 2023 alone, Baykar achieved $1.8 billion in exports, positioning it among Turkey’s top ten exporters across all industries.

The firm has established itself as a key supplier of unmanned aerial vehicles, having secured export agreements with 35 countries. Notably, 34 of these agreements were for the Bayraktar TB2 drone, while 10 were for the more advanced Bayraktar Akinci. As the Bayraktar Kizilelma moves closer to full operational capability, Baykar’s reputation as a leader in defense technology is set to further solidify.
