Belarusian Armored Personnel Carrier: The Volat V2 APC
The Belarusian Armed Forces have proudly introduced their first domestically manufactured armored personnel carrier (APC), marking a significant step towards military self-sufficiency. This new vehicle, known as the Volat V2, aims to lessen the country’s reliance on Russian military technology. Developed by the Minsk Wheel Tractor Plant (MZKT), the Volat V2 is an advanced 8×8 wheeled APC, specifically engineered for transporting troops and providing crucial fire support during amphibious operations and specialized missions.
With an official designation of MZKT-690003-021, the Volat V2 APC is set to replace several outdated Soviet-era military vehicles, including the BTR-70, BTR-80, BMP-1, and BMP-2. After successfully completing state trials, this innovative armored carrier was prominently featured at the MILEX-2025 international defense exhibition held in the capital from May 21 to 24, showcasing Belarus’ growing defense capabilities to the world.
Advanced Features of the Volat V2
Weighing in at an impressive 24,500 kilograms (or 54,013 pounds), the Volat V2 is designed to deliver enhanced firepower, survivability, and mobility on the battlefield. One of its standout features is the incorporation of the remote-controlled Adunok-CM30.2 combat module. This advanced system includes a 30mm automatic cannon, a coaxial 7.62mm PKT machine gun, four Konkurs anti-tank guided missiles, and six smoke grenades, making it a formidable asset for ground troops.
The vehicle is designed to accommodate a three-person crew while providing ample space for an additional eight soldiers. Notably, the Volat V2 boasts impressive resistance to small arms fire and can withstand blasts from anti-tank mines and improvised explosive devices. It is also equipped with several safety features such as an automatic fire extinguishing system, smoke exhaust capabilities, a filter ventilation unit, and a self-recovery winch, ensuring crew protection and enhanced mobility in a variety of operational conditions.
Mobility and Performance
The Volat V2 APC stands out for its exceptional mobility, made possible by an independent hydropneumatic suspension and an automatic transmission. Powered by a robust 550-horsepower engine, this armored carrier achieves a top speed of 110 kilometers per hour (68 miles per hour) on land, making it a highly mobile asset on the battlefield.
Moreover, the Volat V2 is capable of traversing aquatic environments, reaching speeds of 10 kilometers per hour (6.2 miles per hour) on water. This dual-terrain capability allows Belarusian forces to execute a variety of operations, enhancing their overall strategic flexibility and response capabilities in diverse combat scenarios.
