BMP-3 Infantry Fighting Vehicles Delivered to Russian Forces
Rostec has announced the successful delivery of the first batch of BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicles to the Russian Armed Forces this year. This significant achievement follows a thorough demonstration and technical evaluation of the fleet, which confirmed the vehicles’ readiness for deployment in combat situations.
The distribution of these advanced platforms was executed in collaboration with Kurganmashzavod, a subsidiary of Rostec, ensuring a streamlined process for the delivery.
The BMP-3 System
The BMP-3 vehicles delivered are configured in their standard layout, as stated by the state-run company. Since its inception, the BMP-3 has undergone numerous upgrades, particularly enhancing its primary weaponry, and has been adapted into over 20 different variants.
The Russian military’s initial order for the BMP-3 dates back to 2015, requesting “hundreds” of these vehicles to serve as a temporary fleet while a more sophisticated infantry fighting system was in development. Deliveries commenced in 2018 and have persisted through to 2023, reflecting the ongoing commitment to modernizing the military’s capabilities.
Operational Use
Currently, the BMP-3 system is actively utilized in ‘spetsoperatsiya’, the official term for Russia’s military operations in Ukraine. This deployment underscores the vehicle’s importance in contemporary military engagements.
The adaptability and effectiveness of the BMP-3 in various combat scenarios highlight its role as a crucial asset for Russian forces, particularly in the challenging conditions of modern warfare.
Specifications of the BMP-3
The BMP-3 is a formidable infantry fighting vehicle, weighing 18,700 kilograms (41,226 pounds) and measuring 7 meters (23 feet) in length. Its construction features a robust aluminum alloy sheet on all sides, including the turret, providing enhanced durability in combat.
Armament-wise, the BMP-3 is equipped with a 100-millimeter gun launcher, a 30-millimeter autocannon, a grenade launcher, and machine guns, along with an optional remote weapon station that can be fitted with a 57-millimeter autocannon. This diverse arsenal makes it well-suited for a variety of combat situations.
The vehicle is powered by a powerful 500-horsepower diesel engine, granting it an operational range of 600 kilometers (373 miles) and the ability to reach speeds exceeding 70 kilometers (43 miles) per hour, making it both a versatile and mobile combat platform.
