Burkina Faso and Russia: Strengthening Ties During Traore’s Visit

On Saturday, Burkina Faso’s President Ibrahim Traore called for an expansion of military and scientific cooperation with Russia during his visit to Moscow. The military leader met with President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin, a meeting that followed their participation in a Red Square parade, which included several international dignitaries.

In his remarks, Traore emphasized that, “Despite all the sanctions, Russia continues to stand at the forefront of the international arena. It serves as a lesson for all of us.” He praised the modernization of the Russian military’s equipment and noted that Burkina Faso has various projects planned with the Russian defense ministry, although he did not disclose specific details.

Burkina Faso’s Shift in Foreign Policy

Since coming to power in September 2022 via a coup, Traore’s administration has sought to redefine Burkina Faso’s foreign relationships, particularly distancing itself from France, its former colonial power, and aligning more closely with Russia. This shift has been notable amid Russia’s increased isolation following its invasion of Ukraine and the resulting sanctions.

Traore mentioned he is not seeking military support from Russia, especially while Russian forces are actively engaged in Ukraine. Nevertheless, he expressed hope for collaboration in other areas, specifically in sharing knowledge and assisting in the education of Burkina Faso’s youth. He also voiced a desire for help in addressing the country’s ongoing security challenges, where forces are battling a jihadist insurgency.

Putin’s Support for Burkina Faso

In response to Traore’s calls for cooperation, President Putin affirmed that Russia would continue to support Burkina Faso in its fight against “radical groups” and emphasized the importance of training officials. He underlined the shared objective that both nations have in combating terrorism, reflecting a commitment to mutual goals.

Putin also mentioned the potential for increased economic ties, suggesting that cooperation could extend beyond military matters to include economic collaboration. This indicates Russia’s willingness to not only assist Burkina Faso in security matters but also to foster broader bilateral relations.
