China Issues Warnings on Ukraine Remarks
On Thursday, China issued a stern warning concerning the ongoing Ukraine conflict, advising all parties involved against making what it termed “irresponsible remarks.” This statement follows a declaration from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who claimed that Beijing was aware of its citizens being recruited by Russia to aid in the conflict.
Zelensky revealed on Wednesday that Ukrainian intelligence had information on 155 Chinese nationals dispatched to support Moscow’s military endeavors. This revelation came just a day after he mentioned the capture of two Chinese soldiers by Ukrainian forces in Eastern Donetsk.
China’s Foreign Ministry Responds
In response to Zelensky’s allegations, a spokesperson for China’s foreign ministry urged the “relevant parties” to refrain from making comments that could be deemed irresponsible. Lin Jian, speaking at a regular press briefing, emphasized the importance of accurately understanding China’s involvement without explicitly naming either Ukraine or Zelensky.
Lin’s comments reflect China’s careful positioning as a neutral party in this lengthy conflict. Despite condemnation from Western nations regarding its affiliations with Russia, China maintains that it has not engaged directly in the hostilities.
Ukraine’s Accusation and Kremlin’s Denial
Earlier in the week, President Zelensky accused Russia of entangling China in the Ukraine war, a claim that the Kremlin specifically refuted on Thursday. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov declared Zelensky’s assertion as “incorrect,” affirming that Russia is not involving China in the conflict with Ukraine.
During a press briefing, Peskov stated, “China is a partner, friend, and comrade. China has consistently taken a very balanced approach to this situation, so Zelensky’s interpretation is misguided.” This indicates the Kremlin’s intent to reinforce its alliance with China against emerging narratives.
China’s Stance on Nationals in Conflict
Amid the rising tensions, Lin Jian reiterated that Beijing has always urged its nationals to avoid engaging in any armed conflict. He emphasized that China does not consider itself a creator or participant in the Ukraine crisis.
Lin concluded his statements by underscoring China’s role as a proponent of peace, reinforcing the nation’s dedication to advocating for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing war. His remarks highlight Beijing’s desire to manage its diplomatic image amidst complex international relations.
