Counter-Drone Cartridges: IGLA Family Unveiled for Ukraine
Russia is currently testing a new line of specialized cartridges aimed at neutralizing small drones on the battlefield in Ukraine. Known as the IGLA family, these counter-drone cartridges are designed with pellets made from a durable alloy, enhancing their destructive capabilities. According to reports from TASS, the pellets are crafted from a combination of tungsten, nickel, and iron.
A representative from the developer highlighted the effectiveness of these cartridges, noting that during tests, the pellets were able to penetrate deep enough to reach the drone’s circuit board. The impact not only damages the drone’s critical components, such as its propellers and storage battery, but can also puncture the drone’s frame, significantly impairing its functionality.
Unveiling at MILEX 2025
The IGLA cartridges were unveiled by the Russian state conglomerate Rostec during the MILEX 2025 defense exhibition held in Minsk, Belarus in May. This new family of cartridges includes several models, specifically the IGLA 30, IGLA 50, IGLA 100, and Tracer 75. The numbers associated with each model represent their effective range in meters, showcasing their capabilities.
Particularly noteworthy is the IGLA 100 model, which boasts a density that is reported to be 1.5 times greater than that of lead. According to Calibre Defence, this enhanced density allows it to penetrate two 1mm thick aluminum sheets at its furthest range. These cartridges are available in two calibers, 12/70 and 12/76, further expanding their usability in various combat scenarios.
