Counter-Drone System: Smartshooter’s Innovative Solution
Israeli sighting specialist Smartshooter has introduced an innovative portable counter-drone system that incorporates an assault rifle as its primary weapon. This advanced system is operated via the Smash Dome’s Smash Hopper remote-controlled weapon station, which employs a sophisticated fire control system designed for ballistic calculations. This feature significantly enhances the accuracy of target engagement, allowing operators to effectively neutralize drones in various scenarios.
The Smash Hopper is versatile, capable of integrating with a command-and-control network that facilitates automatic target detection and tracking, as well as providing real-time ballistic solutions. Notably, this system can accommodate a range of weapons and ammunition types, enabling it to engage different drone models. Its lightweight design allows for mounting on both manned and unmanned vehicles, as well as on stationary platforms, making it a flexible solution for various operational environments.
Integrated Target Detection
To ensure effective target engagement, the Smash Dome employs a combination of active radio frequency radar and passive optical detection systems. These technologies work together to detect, classify, and track potential threats. Once a drone is identified, the data is relayed to Smash Dome’s proprietary tracking system, which prepares for real-time monitoring and interception.
The system boasts a target detection range of 1 to 2 kilometers (approximately 0.62 to 1.24 miles), providing operators with ample opportunity to engage incoming threats. Additionally, the Smash Dome features a man-in-the-loop option, allowing operators to visually verify targets through the fire control system before launching an automated tracking and response sequence.

In a recent press release, Smartshooter CEO Michal Mor highlighted the growing concern over rogue drones that pose risks to critical areas. Mor also emphasized the system’s seamless integration with existing command-and-control frameworks, describing it as a versatile asset. He noted that it can function independently while also serving as an essential ‘insurance policy’ for passive counter-unmanned aerial systems (C-UAS). This adaptability is crucial for operators who need reliable solutions to protect sensitive locations from drone incursions.
