Coyote Counter-Drone System: A Strategic Partnership

In a significant development in defense collaboration, US defense contractor Raytheon has entered into a strategic partnership with the Tawazun Council of the United Arab Emirates. This agreement, which focuses on counter-drone technology, marks a crucial step towards enhancing the UAE’s defense capabilities and its domestic defense production.

As part of the partnership, Raytheon will transfer technology and work alongside Emirati defense firms to produce components of the Coyote counter-drone system. The facilities for assembly and testing will be situated within the Tawazun Industrial Park, underscoring the UAE’s commitment to developing a robust local defense industry.

Enhanced Capabilities in Drone Defense

The Coyote counter-drone system is designed to address various threats posed by hostile drones effectively. Raytheon’s solution is particularly notable for its small size and low cost, enabling it to be deployed rapidly against individual drones as well as swarms, which vary in size, range, and operational altitude.

Each Coyote unit is fitted with advanced technology, including a Ku-band Radio Frequency Sensor, and is available in three distinct variations: kinetic, non-kinetic, and launched effects, known as the Coyote LE SR. This innovative system not only excels in neutralizing drone threats but also serves multiple functions such as electronic warfare and surveillance.

Operational Deployment with the US Army

The efficacy of the Coyote system has already been demonstrated through its deployment with the US Army, which recently placed an order for 600 drone interceptors. This procurement comes at a crucial time, as US forces continue to face threats from drone attacks in the Middle East, necessitating advanced defense mechanisms.

With the Coyote system operational, the alliance between Raytheon and the UAE promises to significantly bolster regional security. The local manufacturing capabilities established through this partnership are expected to enhance the swift deployment of defense technologies, ultimately benefiting both nations.
