Cyprus Orders Sherpa Armored Vehicles with Akeron Launchers
Cyprus has officially placed an order for Sherpa armored vehicles equipped with Akeron missile launchers from the French company Arquus. This strategic acquisition, announced in Athens, involves a total of 12 vehicles that will enhance the capabilities of the Cypriot National Guard. Each Sherpa will come armed with advanced weapon systems capable of deploying MBDA’s highly specialized warheads, marking a significant step in modernizing the island’s defense.
The decision to procure these vehicles follows a successful trial held in Cyprus in September 2022. During this test, the firepower of an Akeron-equipped Sherpa was evaluated against distant targets located between 2,500 and 3,000 meters (approximately 8,202 to 9,843 feet). The assessment included both autonomous and cooperative operational modes, showcasing the vehicle’s versatility and effectiveness.

This initiative forms part of a broader commitment to reinforce collaboration between Cyprus and France, aiming to boost the region’s defense industries. Arquus highlighted that the Cypriot Ministry of Defence is interested in enhancing its relationship with the Versailles-based company. This includes plans to modernize Cyprus’s 4×4 and 6×6 VAB armored personnel carriers, which are crucial assets for the national armed forces.
Moreover, Arquus has established partnerships with other regional nations, including Greece, where it recently delivered 240 light armored vehicles. The Sherpa vehicle, produced by Arquus, is a light armored system renowned for its robust capabilities. Weighing in at 11 tons (approximately 9,979 kilograms), the vehicle can be configured up to 6 meters (20 feet) in length and is capable of transporting a crew of up to 10 personnel. The Sherpa is fortified with EU and NATO-standard anti-ballistic armor and can be armed with a variety of weapons including 12.7-millimeter machine guns and 40-millimeter grenade launchers.
In terms of performance, the Sherpa is powered by either Euro 3 or Euro 5 engines, generating 215 horsepower. It boasts an impressive operational range of 900 kilometers (559 miles) and can achieve a maximum speed of 120 kilometers (75 miles) per hour. In addition to the standard station wagon configuration, the Sherpa is available in various versions including scout, weapons carrier, assault ladder, and police variants, catering to diverse operational needs.
