Czech Defense Support for Ukraine: Excalibur’s Bold Move
Czech defense company Excalibur Army has recently set up a representative office in Ukraine, signaling a significant step towards local production of large-caliber ammunition. This office will be instrumental in managing procurement processes, overseeing essential documentation, and providing technical assistance aimed at bolstering local collaboration in joint defense manufacturing efforts.
Since the onset of the conflict with Russia in February 2022, Excalibur Army has been a key supplier to Ukraine, delivering over a thousand land systems to the Ukrainian government. This equipment includes vital assets such as tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, artillery, and rocket launchers, alongside more than two million rounds of ammunition.
Support from the Czech Republic
Throughout the three-year conflict, the Czech Republic has consistently supported Ukraine’s military efforts by supplying a diverse array of equipment. This aid has originated from both government initiatives and grassroots movements. Notably, in April, the Czech government concluded a delivery of 86 T-72M1 main battle tanks to Ukraine. These Soviet-era tanks, acquired in the post-Cold War era, included several units that had been upgraded to the more advanced T-72M4 configuration to improve their effectiveness on the battlefield.
In addition to government support, Czech civil society has actively contributed to the defense of Ukraine. A grassroots fundraising campaign named “A Gift for Putin,” started in early 2023, successfully raised over $2.9 million from more than 20,500 donors. The funds collected are earmarked for acquiring a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter for the Ukrainian armed forces. Furthermore, Ukraine’s state-owned defense company, Ukroboronprom, entered into a deal last year with Czech manufacturer Colt CZ Group to assemble NATO-standard firearms locally. This agreement includes the transfer of licenses to produce CZ BREN 2 battle rifles and other weaponry within Ukraine.
