Czech Republic Delivers Final T-72M1 Tanks to Ukraine

The Czech Republic has completed the transfer of the last batch of T-72M1 main battle tanks to Ukraine, marking a significant contribution in response to the ongoing aggression from Russia. This final shipment is part of a larger promise made by Prague, encompassing a total of 86 tanks that were inherited following the Cold War. Among these, some were notably upgraded to the T-72M4 configuration, showcasing a commitment to enhancing the capabilities of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

According to a report from the local news agency Hospodářské Noviny, the concluding delivery consisted of 20 tanks from the 73rd Tank Battalion of Czechia, leaving the battalion with no tanks remaining in its arsenal. The initial batch of T-72M1 tanks was sent to Ukraine in April 2022, making the Czech Republic the first NATO member to supply tanks to Ukraine after Moscow’s invasion earlier that year.

Future Plans for Czech Military Modernization

In a strategic move to modernize its military, the Czech Republic is preparing to receive Leopard 2A4 tanks from Germany by 2026. This development aims to fill the gap left by the phased-out T-72 fleet, thereby enhancing the operational readiness of the Czech Armed Forces. Under a national security strategy unveiled in 2024, the government has ordered over 40 new Leopard tanks in addition to more than 60 additional Leopard 2A8 variants.

Czechia is exploring the establishment of a domestic factory for the production of Leopard tanks, which would not only streamline procurement but also bolster local defense capabilities. This initiative exemplifies the government’s focus on ensuring a robust military infrastructure while adapting to evolving geopolitical challenges.

As part of its military upgrade, the T-72M1 tank features impressive specifications. Measuring 10 meters (33 feet) in length and weighing 39,000 kilograms (85,980 pounds), it is operated by a crew of three. The tank’s design incorporates layers of steel, composite materials, and reactive armor for enhanced protection.

Additionally, the T-72M1 is armed with a formidable 125-millimeter cannon and accommodates a 7.62-millimeter machine gun and a 12.7-millimeter heavy machine gun. Powered by a 780-horsepower diesel engine and featuring a hydraulically assisted transmission with seven forward gears, it achieves a remarkable top speed of 60 kilometers (37 miles) per hour and boasts an operational range of 500 kilometers (311 miles).
