South Korea Proposes Robust Defense Cooperation with Greece
In a significant move to bolster military collaboration, South Korea has put forth a comprehensive defense cooperation proposal to Greece. This initiative involves not just the construction of submarines and joint production of military vehicles, but also the integration of manned-unmanned aircraft systems. As part of Europe’s ongoing rearmament efforts, these proposals emphasize the crucial role of the local defense industry in Greece.
The proposal was formally presented by Hanwha Ocean, which includes plans for building new submarines and modernizing Greece’s existing Type 214 submarine fleet. Hanwha has a history with Greece, having previously constructed three Type 214 submarines. The company is also actively developing KSS-III submarines with advanced ballistic missile capabilities, showcasing its commitment to enhancing Greece’s naval capabilities.
MUM-T Systems Proposal
In addition to submarine development, Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) has introduced the idea of producing Manned-Unmanned Teaming (MUM-T) systems in Greece. This innovative approach involves pairing piloted fighter jets with unmanned combat drones, a concept currently being refined for South Korea’s KF-21 fighter program. This proposal highlights the shift towards incorporating advanced technology in military operations.
Moreover, the proposal includes the provision and joint production of military vehicles aimed at updating the aging fleet used by the Greek Army. Athens has shown interest in pursuing this initiative, contingent upon budget considerations. Greek officials have confirmed that these proposals fit well within the framework of their Long-Term Armament Plan, indicating a strategy for modernizing their military capabilities.

These initiatives are strategically aligned with Seoul’s aspirations to establish a foothold in the forthcoming European rearmament program, which is projected to involve an investment of €800 billion in the coming years.
