Democratic Republic of Congo: AU Warns Against Fragmentation
The African Union (AU) has issued a stern warning regarding the potential fragmentation of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), following the recent capture of a second city by the Rwandan-backed M23 armed group. This alarming development occurred just two days prior to the AU’s statement, highlighting the escalating tensions in the eastern part of the country.
During a press briefing, Bankole Adeoye, the AU’s Peace and Security Commissioner, emphasized the need to prevent the balkanization of eastern DRC. While he did not directly name Rwanda, Adeoye called for the immediate withdrawal of M23 and its supporters from all urban areas, including Goma airport, to restore stability and peace.
Escalating Conflict and Concerns
M23’s takeover of the provincial capital Goma at the end of January marked a significant escalation in violence in an already volatile region that has endured decades of conflict. The group’s advance southward has raised alarms not only within the DRC but also among its neighboring countries, which fear the instability could spill over their borders.
In response to the escalating situation, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged caution, stating that any regional escalation must be avoided at all costs. His remarks reflect the international community’s growing concern regarding the DRC’s stability and the potential for wider conflict.
Sovereignty and Integrity of DRC
Adeoye reiterated the critical importance of upholding the sovereignty, political unity, and territorial integrity of the Democratic Republic of Congo. He stressed that any foreign interference or support for armed groups like M23 undermines not only the DRC’s stability but also threatens regional peace.
The call for respect towards the DRC’s sovereignty comes amid rising tensions and the urgent need for a unified response to the threats posed by armed groups. The AU’s stance is clear: it is essential for all involved parties to prioritize peace and stability in a region that has faced countless challenges.
