Drones in Hellenic Navy: Naval Group and ALTUS LSA Agreement
Naval Group has recently signed a significant cooperation agreement with ALTUS LSA, a Greek company, aimed at enhancing the capabilities of the Hellenic Navy through the integration of drones on surface vessels. This memorandum of understanding was formalized during the DEFEA exhibition held in Athens, showcasing various naval assets, including the advanced FDI frigates and Gowind corvettes. As part of this agreement, the ATLAS-8 drone has been proposed as a prime candidate for deployment, boasting a robust design tailored for cargo transport.
The ATLAS-8 is an electric octocopter platform capable of carrying a payload of up to 50 kilograms (approximately 110 pounds). Its modular framework not only allows for efficient transportation but also permits outfitting with weapons systems, enabling it to conduct strike missions. Furthermore, this drone is equipped with an inertial navigation system, ensuring operational effectiveness even in environments where GPS signals may be unavailable.
Integration of Counter-Drone System
The collaboration reflects Naval Group’s strategic recognition of the vital role drones can play on modern naval platforms. In addition to the drone integration, there’s another exciting development; the French shipbuilder has entered into a partnership with the Hellenic Aerospace Industry (HAI) to explore the potential integration of the Centaur counter-drone system aboard Greek naval vessels. This move is indicative of the increasing importance of counter-drone capabilities in maritime operations.
One of the primary candidates for this integration effort is the FDI frigate, a vessel currently under construction by Naval Group. HAI’s expertise in aeronautical solutions and maintenance has made it a valuable partner in advancing the FDI program for the Hellenic Navy. According to Naval Group, this partnership not only reinforces the capabilities of the Hellenic Navy but also paves the way for future collaborative projects that promise enhanced maritime security and operational efficiency.
