DroneShield Secures Major European Contracts
Sydney-based DroneShield has marked a significant achievement by securing three contracts totaling 61.6 million Australian dollars, which is roughly equivalent to $40 million, from a military client in Europe. This deal, facilitated through a local reseller, aims to counter the escalating threats posed by drones. The company is set to deliver an unspecified number of handheld detection and counter-drone systems, along with their necessary accessories, during the third quarter of this year. Notably, this contract stands as the largest single order in DroneShield’s history, surpassing its entire projected revenue of 57.7 million Australian dollars for 2024.
This latest deal follows a previous substantial order worth 32.2 million Australian dollars from another customer in April, indicating a surge in demand for the company’s advanced solutions. Oleg Vornik, the CEO of DroneShield, noted, “The scale and frequency of orders have been increasing as leading military customers transition from testing hardware to broader implementations,” highlighting a significant shift in the defense sector.
New Manufacturing Facility in Europe
In response to the growing demand, DroneShield is taking a major step by establishing its first manufacturing and assembly facility in Europe. This marks the company’s first venture outside of Australia and emphasizes its commitment to the European market. The facility, referred to as DroneShield’s European Centre of Excellence, will not only focus on manufacturing and assembly but also serve as a hub for research and development, drone testing, and training. This strategic move will ensure that certain solutions contain at least 65 percent European content.
The establishment of this facility aims to bolster local capabilities and reinforce the supply line within Europe, allowing DroneShield to operate more efficiently in a critical market.
Alignment with EU Defense Initiatives
DroneShield’s significant contract aligns perfectly with the EU’s expansive 800-billion-euro ReArm Europe Plan/Readiness 2030 initiative, which was announced earlier this year. This initiative seeks to enhance the EU’s defense spending by providing financial flexibility, boosting industrial autonomy, and offering support to Ukraine amid its ongoing conflict with Russia. It demonstrates a broader commitment within the European Union to strengthen its defense capabilities.
Vornik pointed out that fostering a robust European supply chain will enhance the sovereign capabilities of nations in the region. He emphasized that the Australian software development team will continue to deliver crucial updates to tackle emerging threats, not just in Ukraine but globally, reflecting DroneShield’s proactive approach to defense.
Strengthening Global Defense Partnerships
Vornik further emphasized the importance of expanding their European team and ramping up manufacturing output in Australia. He expressed confidence that these developments will adequately position DroneShield to meet the rising demand from both existing and new defense partners. This comprehensive strategy showcases the company’s commitment to enhancing its operational footprint while responding to the evolving landscape of defense challenges.
