Embraer C-390 Millennium: Sweden’s Next-Gen Transport Aircraft
Sweden is set to enhance its air transport capabilities with the acquisition of four Embraer C-390 Millennium transport aircraft. This strategic decision was unveiled at a recent defense and aerospace expo held in Brazil, marking a significant step forward for the Swedish Air Force. The aircraft will be employed for rapid troop and equipment transfers, both in domestic operations and during international missions. The final assembly of these planes will occur at Embraer’s facility in São Paulo, with deliveries expected to commence soon after the company finalizes negotiations with Swedish authorities.
Once the C-390s arrive, they will be stationed at Skaraborg Air Base in Såtenäs. Here, they will work alongside the existing fleet of C-130 Hercules aircraft, which have faithfully served the Swedish military since the 1960s. By the year 2030, the C-390s are anticipated to replace the aging C-130s gradually, ushering in a new era of military transport capabilities for Sweden.

The C-390 Millennium is a versatile aircraft designed for various military transport roles. With a wingspan of 35 meters (115 feet) and a maximum fuel capacity of 35,000 kilograms (77,162 pounds), it boasts an impressive payload limit of 26,000 kilograms (57,320 pounds). Its multirole capabilities allow it to accommodate different mission profiles, whether transporting goods or personnel.
The aircraft can carry up to seven master pallets, six pallets with around 30 personnel, 60 paratroopers, or even around 70 stretchers for medical evacuations. Additionally, it can be outfitted with a refueling system, enabling it to perform airborne refueling operations, enhancing its operational flexibility in various scenarios.

The C-390 is powered by twin IAE V2500-E5 turbofan engines, propelling it to impressive speeds exceeding 900 kilometers (559 miles) per hour.
