EU Announces €60 Million Support Package for Lebanon’s Armed Forces
On Tuesday, the European Union revealed a significant support package amounting to 60 million euros (approximately $62 million) aimed at bolstering Lebanon’s armed forces. This announcement comes at a crucial moment as Lebanon grapples with ongoing instability and seeks to uphold a tenuous ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas highlighted the importance of this assistance, stating that it arrives “at a critical juncture for the implementation of the ceasefire agreement between Lebanon and Israel.” She underscored the vital role of the Lebanese armed forces in ensuring both regional and domestic stability.
Under the terms of the ceasefire agreement, Lebanon has stipulated that Israel must withdraw its forces from the southern region of the country by January 26. The Lebanese military is set to coordinate its deployment with UN peacekeepers during this transition. Simultaneously, Hezbollah is required to dismantle any remaining military infrastructure in the south and to reposition its forces north of the Litani River, which is roughly 30 kilometers (20 miles) from the border.
International Efforts to Strengthen Lebanon’s Military
The EU’s financial assistance is part of a broader initiative from Western nations aimed at reinforcing Lebanon’s military capabilities. This follows last week’s announcement from the United States, which pledged over $117 million in security aid to Lebanon. These international efforts come in response to the ongoing challenges faced by the Lebanese armed forces, particularly as they work to maintain order amidst the regional turbulence.
Additionally, during a visit to Beirut on Friday, French President Emmanuel Macron declared that France would soon host a conference focused on providing aid to rebuild Lebanon in the aftermath of the recent Israel-Hezbollah conflict. This commitment underscores the urgent need for international support as Lebanon has been struggling for years to fund its public services, including military operations, particularly since the onset of an economic crisis in 2019.
Challenges Ahead for Lebanon After Recent Conflicts
Lebanon’s situation has been exacerbated by the recent warfare that unfolded between Hezbollah and Israel, which came to a close in November.
