Bulgaria Receives First F-16 Block 70 Aircraft

Bulgaria has officially welcomed its first F-16 Block 70 aircraft from Lockheed Martin during a recent handover ceremony held in Greenville, South Carolina. This significant delivery marks a milestone in the Balkan nation’s $1.7 billion order made in 2019 for a total of eight F-16 Vipers, which also includes training for 14 pilots. Additionally, a subsequent order was placed in 2022 for another eight aircraft and training for 18 pilots, ultimately enhancing the Bulgarian Air Force’s fleet with 16 state-of-the-art Fighting Falcons.

Bulgarian Defense Minister Atanas Zapryanov expressed pride in the acquisition, stating, “The F-16 Block 70 aircraft is a completely new, fourth-generation aircraft with tremendous capabilities. This is a multi-role fighter, unlike the Bulgarian MiG-29 and Su-25, which we currently have in service.” His remarks highlight the advanced capabilities of the F-16 Block 70, which will play a crucial role in modernizing the country’s military aviation.

Renovations at the Third Air Base

In addition to the aircraft delivery, Bulgaria is also investing in infrastructure improvements at its Third Air Base. A one-year contract has been signed to renovate the base, which will involve the construction of 16 fighter aircraft shelters, two mobile hangars, and other necessary facilities according to Lockheed Martin’s specifications. This upgrade is essential to support the operational readiness of the newly acquired F-16s.

Mike Shoemaker, VP and General Manager of Lockheed Martin’s Integrated Fighter Group, emphasized the importance of this modernization, stating, “The F-16 will help the Bulgarian Air Force stay ahead of regional threats and play a vital role in the allied peacekeeping mission in Europe and globally.” He noted that the F-16 has a proven track record of air dominance, and the Block 70 version will provide Bulgaria with a highly capable, combat-tested aircraft.

Upcoming Deliveries and Training Programs

The delivery schedule for the F-16s is on track, with all eight multi-role jets from the initial 2019 contract expected to arrive in Bulgaria within this year. Among these, two Fighting Falcons are anticipated to land in the country around late March to early April, coinciding with the training of five pilots who will be among the first to operate the new aircraft.

Defense Minister Zapryanov highlighted the significance of the training program, stating, “The training program is a key part of the contract and very important to us. We are not just purchasing aircraft, simulators, weapons, and ammunition. We have allocated over 150 million dollars for the training of our flight crew.” The third aircraft will remain at Lockheed Martin’s Greenville facility to train Bulgarian engineering and technical personnel, while the remaining five are currently being assembled.

Future Prospects and Expansion Plans

Looking ahead, work on the 2022 contract for additional F-16s is set to begin by 2027, with preparations proceeding as planned. This expansion will further bolster the capabilities of the Bulgarian Air Force, ensuring that it remains well-equipped to handle contemporary defense challenges.

The modernization of the Bulgarian military through these aircraft acquisitions and infrastructure upgrades is a clear indication of the country’s commitment to enhancing its national security and defense posture. As Bulgaria continues to strengthen its air capabilities, it is poised to play a more significant role in regional stability and international peacekeeping efforts.
