On Tuesday, France officially transferred control of a military base to Senegal, representing a significant step in the country’s strategic withdrawal of troops from West Africa. This decision aligns with President Bassirou Dioumaye Faye’s announcement late last year, asserting that France, as a former colonial power, must close its military bases in Senegal by 2025. The transfer process commenced in March with several initial handovers to Senegalese authorities.
The base transferred on Tuesday was a military communications center situated in Rufisque, close to Dakar. According to a statement from the French embassy in Senegal, this facility has played a vital role in overseeing communications along the southern Atlantic coast since its establishment in 1960.

Following Senegal’s independence in 1960, the nation established itself as one of France’s most reliable allies in Africa.
