FREMM EVO: Italy’s Next-Gen Multi-Purpose Frigate Unveiled
Fincantieri has officially marked the beginning of construction for the Italian Navy’s next-generation multi-purpose frigate, known as FREMM EVO, with a steel-cutting ceremony held in Riva Trigoso, Genoa. This pivotal moment signifies not only the commencement of the project’s physical build but also reflects a significant partnership agreement signed by Rome with Orizzonte Sistemi Navali, which is a joint venture that includes prominent industry leaders such as Fincantieri, Leonardo, and the Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation (OCCAR). The construction of the first hull is a noteworthy accomplishment under the 2024 contract, with plans for a second frigate to follow assembly in 2026.
Both vessels, currently unnamed, are projected to be delivered to the Italian Navy by 2029 and 2030, respectively. This evolution of the FREMM class highlights Italy’s commitment to enhancing its naval capabilities with advanced technology and strategic partnerships.
Leveraging Franco-Italian Collaboration
The FREMM EVO frigates are designed utilizing the established FREMM model, which has been a collaborative effort between the Italian and French governments. Operational in both countries, these frigates are classified as the Bergamini class in Italy and the Aquitaine class in France. This dual-classification underscores the shared infrastructure and engineering excellence between the two nations.
Despite their shared architecture, these vessels will each be tailored to meet the specific operational needs of their respective navies, which includes variations such as general-purpose and anti-submarine warfare configurations. Beyond Italy and France, the FREMM system has also been adopted by Egypt and Morocco, expanding its footprint in naval defense.
Global Influence of the FREMM Design
In 2020, a notable extension of the FREMM design was recognized when the Pentagon awarded a contract to Marinette Marine, Fincantieri’s American subsidiary, to develop a US Navy frigate based on this model, which is being constructed in Wisconsin. This highlights the increasing global interest in the FREMM capabilities and design.
Further emphasizing its worldwide appeal, in 2021, the Indonesian Navy also procured six FREMM vessels from Fincantieri, reflecting the growing demand for this advanced frigate design across different naval forces.
Specifications and Capabilities of FREMM EVO
The FREMM EVO is an impressive asset, measuring 145 meters (476 feet) in length and featuring a 20-meter (66-foot) beam. This state-of-the-art frigate will be outfitted with a range of advanced weaponry, including anti-ship and surface-to-air missiles, torpedoes, decoy launchers, and naval weapon turrets. It will also include a sophisticated cyber-resilient sensor and communication suite.
Designed to accommodate up to 180 crew members, the ship can deploy two maritime helicopters and support various inflatable boats. With an operational speed exceeding 30 knots (56 kilometers or 35 miles per hour) and a range of 6,800 nautical miles (12,600 kilometers), the FREMM EVO is prepared to meet the challenges of modern naval warfare.
