French President Dismisses Mandatory Military Service
French President Emmanuel Macron has decisively rejected the notion of reinstating mandatory military service in a move that underlines his approach to national defense. Speaking to regional newspapers, Macron stated that bringing back conscription is not a viable option for France. He cited logistical challenges as a key reason, noting that the country abolished compulsory military service in 2001 and currently lacks the infrastructure to support such a system.
Despite dismissing mandatory service, Macron emphasized the importance of mobilizing society as a whole in response to growing threats, particularly from Russia. He signaled that an announcement regarding new approaches to bolster national defense will be forthcoming in the weeks ahead.
