Introduction to the SLAMF Program
The French Navy has recently taken a significant step forward in maritime security by receiving its first mine warfare surface drone as part of the Future Mine Countermeasures System (SLAMF) initiative. This cutting-edge drone is equipped with a towed sonar system that connects to a portable operations center based in Brest, France’s second-largest military port. The French Navy anticipates achieving initial operational capability for this advanced system by the end of 2025, marking a new era in naval mine countermeasures.
The SLAMF program is designed to enhance the French Navy’s operational capabilities in intricate maritime environments. This includes performing uncrewed sonar survey missions even in challenging sea conditions, up to a sea state of 4, which will allow for accurate and continuous mapping of the ocean floor.
