Hyundai’s Strategic Move Towards Submarine Development
HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has taken a significant step forward by signing a crucial agreement with the Portuguese Navy to explore the joint development of innovative small submarines. The partnership was formalized during the recent Marine Defense Exhibition 2025 (MADEX) held in Singapore, marking a potential strategic alliance that extends to areas including ship maintenance and overhaul services, as reported by Chosun.
This collaboration is in line with the Portuguese Navy’s ongoing efforts to enhance its fleet, particularly as it looks to expand the operational capabilities of its two existing 2,000-ton Tridente-class submarines, commissioned back in 2010. According to Defense Archives and insights from former Chief of Portuguese Naval Staff Admiral Gouveia e Melo, along with current Chief Admiral Jorge Nobre de Sousa, the new submarines may either mirror the specifications of the current Tridente class or come in smaller variants, offering flexible options for the naval force.
Innovative Submarine Models Unveiled
At the MADEX exhibition, HD Hyundai showcased three new export submarine models, demonstrating their commitment to advancing naval technology. These models include submarines of 2,300 tons, 1,500 tons, and smaller 800-ton variants, aiming to cater to a diverse range of naval operational requirements. The introduction of these models highlights Hyundai’s innovative approach and dedication to producing state-of-the-art marine solutions.
Additionally, in a bid to further enhance their naval capabilities, HD Hyundai entered into a memorandum of understanding with POSCO, focusing on the development of new materials intended for next-generation ship hulls. This endeavor aims to leverage advanced materials technology to improve submarine performance and durability, complementing their ongoing projects in naval construction.

In a broader context, Hyundai’s partnership strategy includes several key agreements that signify their intent to push boundaries in defense technologies. Alongside the agreement with POSCO, Hyundai has also collaborated with Korea Aerospace Industries and LIG Nex1 to focus on the advancement of a multipurpose unmanned power ship.
