German Aircraft Laser Incident: China Targets EU Mission
On Tuesday, Berlin revealed that the Chinese military had aimed a laser at a German aircraft involved in a European Union-led mission to ensure marine traffic safety in the Red Sea. The German Foreign Ministry took to social media platform X to express that such actions put German personnel in danger and jeopardized the operation, stating that they are “entirely unacceptable.” Following the incident, China’s ambassador to Germany was summoned for urgent discussions.
According to a spokesman from the German defense ministry, the hostile act occurred “without reason or prior contact” during what should have been a routine operation in the skies above the Red Sea as part of the EU’s Aspides mission. This aircraft, identified as a “multi-sensor platform,” functions as a “flying eye” for reconnaissance missions. The spokesman emphasized that the actions of the Chinese vessel posed significant risks to German personnel and equipment.

In response to the dangerous encounter, the German aircraft was compelled to abandon its mission, returning to a base situated in Djibouti. This incident raises questions about the nature of the laser that was directed at the aircraft, with uncertainty lingering over whether it was a weapon or part of a laser guidance system. Reports from the daily newspaper Bild indicate that the altercation took place on July 2, close to the Yemeni coastline.
The EU’s Aspides mission in the Red Sea currently involves up to 700 German soldiers, tasked with safeguarding shipping from potential assaults by Yemen’s Houthi rebels. Just the day before the laser incident, the Houthis claimed responsibility for an attack on a Greek-owned, Liberian-flagged vessel—marking the first such attack of 2023. Since the onset of the Gaza conflict in October, the Houthis have intensified efforts against Israeli targets and commercial shipping in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, claiming these actions are in solidarity with the Palestinian cause, despite previously observing a two-month ceasefire earlier in the year.
