Global 7500 Aircraft: Swiss Air Force’s New Multimission Plane
Bombardier Defense, a Canadian firm, has recently introduced the Swiss Air Force’s inaugural Global 7500 long-range multimission aircraft. This significant announcement came after the delivery of the aircraft in December 2024, marking a key step in Switzerland’s initiative to enhance its airborne fleet. The new aircraft is intended for a variety of roles, including special military and federal transport missions, emergency evacuations, and humanitarian deployments.
In 2023, Armasuisse, the Swiss defense procurement agency, revealed plans to procure new capabilities to replace the aging Cessna Citation Excel 560XLs, which have been in service since 2002. This strategic move reflects Switzerland’s commitment to modernizing its air capabilities and ensuring that its armed forces are equipped for contemporary challenges.
Advanced Defense Features and Training
To bolster its defensive capabilities, the Global 7500 will be fitted with a Man-Portable Air Defense System (MANPADS) early in the year. This upgrade is crucial for meeting the self-protection requirements set forth by the Swiss defense agency. MANPADS systems are designed to be shoulder-launched, utilizing short-range guided missiles to effectively neutralize threats, particularly those posed by low-altitude enemy aircraft.
In parallel, training sessions for the aircraft’s future aircrew and ground support personnel are set to commence. This preparation is essential for achieving full operational capability by the year’s end. Following its induction, the Global 7500 will be stationed at Payerne Air Base, with plans to relocate it to Bern-Belp airport after two years.
A Remarkable Aircraft: Speed, Range, and Capacity
The Global 7500 is an impressive aircraft, measuring 111 feet (34 meters) in length and boasting a wingspan of 104 feet (32 meters). It is powered by two state-of-the-art General Electric Passport engines, allowing it to reach speeds of up to Mach 0.925, which equates to approximately 691 miles (1,111 kilometers) per hour. With a remarkable range of 7,700 nautical miles (8,861 miles or 14,260 kilometers), the aircraft can operate at altitudes of up to 51,000 feet (15,544 meters).
Designed for passenger comfort and operational efficiency, the Global 7500 can accommodate up to 19 passengers. It has a substantial fuel capacity of 51,503 pounds (23,361 kilograms) and a payload capacity of 5,800 pounds (2,631 kilograms). This combination of speed, range, and capacity positions the Global 7500 as a versatile solution for the Swiss Air Force’s diverse mission requirements.

It has quickly become a customer favorite.” He highlighted that this aircraft represents a landmark achievement for Bombardier Defense, being the first Global 7500 tailored for head-of-state multi-mission needs.
