GlobalEye AEW&C: Enhancing French Military Capabilities
Saab and France’s defense procurement agency have officially signed a joint declaration of intent regarding the prospective sale of the GlobalEye airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft to the French military. This significant development is anticipated to culminate in a finalized contract in the coming months, which will encompass aircraft delivery, ground systems, comprehensive training, and essential support services.
Micael Johansson, President and CEO of Saab, emphasized the strategic benefits of this acquisition, stating, “It will enhance the French Armed Forces’ situational awareness and threat detection across the air, land, and sea domains.” This advancement aligns with France’s commitment to bolstering its military capabilities in an increasingly complex global security environment.
Advanced Technology for Comprehensive Surveillance
The GlobalEye AEW&C aircraft stands out due to its sophisticated integration of the Erieye Extended Range radar, which is ingeniously housed within a 10-meter (33-foot) structure mounted on the fuselage. This radar employs an Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) system, renowned for its impressive ability to detect and track targets over extended distances, even within settings beset by signal interference, clutter, or jamming.
Operating from an altitude of 35,000 feet (10,668 meters), the GlobalEye is equipped to identify low-flying targets down to just 200 feet (61 meters) above ground level. The radar system’s capabilities extend further, enabling it to monitor surface targets for maritime surveillance, including tracking smaller vessels like jet skis.
Land-Based Capabilities and Operational Flexibility
In addition to its aerial surveillance capabilities, GlobalEye employs Ground Moving Target Indication technology to effectively detect and track moving vehicles on land. Its multifaceted system includes an Automatic Identification System, an Electro-Optical System, and Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar for enhanced object recognition and classification.
One of the standout features of the GlobalEye is its ability to generate high-quality radar images under all weather conditions, thanks to its dedicated radar system. This aircraft is designed for extended operations, boasting mission endurance of over 11 hours without the need for refueling. Such sustained operational capability supports comprehensive surveillance across vast geographic areas.
